Characteristics of the Pitta Individual
The word Pitta is derived from the Sanskrit root “tapa,” meaning “to heat.” Pitta represents the principle of Fire and transformation in the body.
Everything that enters the body must undergo digestion and transformation—from sensory experiences to the food we eat. Some foods, such as rice, require external cooking before the body’s digestive fire can act upon them. Along with Agni (digestive fire), Pitta is associated with the enzymes and metabolic processes that play an important role in digestion and metabolism.
Pitta performs several important functions, including supporting digestion, regulating body heat through transformation, appetite, vitality, learning and understanding. When Pitta is disturbed or excessive, qualities such as anger, hatred, criticism and irritability may become more prominent.
Pitta is characterised by the qualities of hot, sharp, light, oily, liquid and spreading. It is associated with the tastes sour, bitter and pungent, and with a characteristic fleshy or strong body odour. Pitta is traditionally associated with the colours red and yellow.
These qualities can be reflected in the physical and behavioural characteristics traditionally described for a Pitta constitution.
A person with a predominantly Pitta constitution generally has a medium body frame and moderate weight. They tend not to gain or lose weight very easily. Their teeth may be sharp and their gums soft and sometimes sensitive. Their eyes are often described as bright but sensitive to strong light. They generally have a strong appetite and thirst and may enjoy hot and spicy foods.
Pitta individuals are traditionally associated with good learning, understanding, concentration and memory. They may have strong organisational and leadership abilities and tend to value discipline and principles. Their sharp and analytical nature can sometimes express itself as criticism, judgement, perfectionism or irritability.
They may be attracted to professions associated with leadership, knowledge, authority or refinement, and may appreciate luxury, perfumes and jewellery. Traditionally, Pitta constitution is described as having moderate strength and a moderate lifespan, with balanced levels of material and spiritual knowledge.
